As Ramblers UK celebrates an impressive 90 years of campaigning for walkers and promoting the joys of rambling, Winchester’s local Ramblers Group is marking the occasion with a series of exciting events throughout the summer. Following a warm and dry start to the summer, ideal for outdoor adventures, local walkers are embracing the countryside with clear skies and dry paths – perfect conditions for a series of walks and celebrations.

Earlier in the year, the group hosted two immensely successful events – the Walks with Artists on the South Downs in April and May, and the Walking Weekend in June. These events were a hit with both local residents and visitors, offering everyone the chance to experience the beauty of the Hampshire countryside in good company.

Looking ahead, Winchester Ramblers will host a special mini-festival of free Jane Austen walks in early August. These walks will take participants to key locations in Hampshire where the renowned author lived, wrote, and walked – a true celebration of the region’s literary heritage.

But the celebrations don’t stop there. In addition to the special events, the Ramblers Group continues to offer a regular programme of over 140 walks throughout the year. Ranging from 3 to 15 miles, these walks take place locally and further afield, offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the health benefits of walking and explore the stunning Hampshire countryside.

Winchester Ramblers is committed to maintaining the condition of local footpaths, regularly monitoring the paths across 30 parishes. In the spirit of community, the group encourages local volunteers to “adopt a parish” to monitor and help with path maintenance. Even if you aren’t able to volunteer directly, you can support by reporting issues on the Hampshire Rights of Way website: hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/rightsofway/reportaproblem

The group welcomes new walkers, with the opportunity to join up to three walks before deciding to take out Ramblers membership. Becoming a member offers even more benefits, including access to walking holidays and events across the UK, as well as the opportunity to join any of the 500+ local groups nationwide.
